I have been terrible about posting. I'll put up my pictures of the picnic tonight when I get home.
But first, I've been considering something, but it may be against the costumers code of ethics. Is it ok to male the same dress that someone else did? If you both had the same inspiration piece( extant gown, painting, movie costume, ect.) can you do it too? Or what if you found a period print and wanted to make a certain type of gown, but another person already made that style with the same fabric, it it ok to do it too? And I'm not talking about the curtain a long, where the point is to have the same fabric. I don't want to offend anyone.

I think both are ok. We have so limited resources in both prints, gowns, paintings and also fabrics. Most costumers seem to shop in the same places. And sometimes you've been planning on copying a fashion plate for years or have been sitting on a fabric and then someone else comes along, unaware of your plans and beats you to it. I don't think it would be fair for the first person to have to forget the project because of that.

Only thing I wouldn't encourage anyone to do is to copy another costumer's completely original idea / gown, not based on any plate etc. But that's a completely different thing than the two situations you asked about.

It is not possible to copy something exactly. You will choose different fabrics, assemble the garment differently, make different choices based upon your skills and limitations. Add to it the chances of being the exact same size/measurements as another costumer, and it can only ever end up to be "based on the same reference".

And what [Bad username or site: the=aristocat @ livejournal.com] said above - just don't copy someone else's original modern personal design without clearing with them first.

I've seen this come up several times before in costumer circles, and the general consensus is that it is indeed OK to use the same inspiration image as another costumer--for example, I know of at least three costumers who have completed/will complete the Marie Antoinette riding habit from Fastes de Cour. Plain and simple, we are not designing something original when we make a costume, we are simulating something that had already been done. We are all copycats already!

I agree with it being fine to use the same portrait or extant gown for inspiration, we're all using the same base resources! if it was just using the same fabric in a different style, totally have at. Same fabric and same style? I think you're probably find but if it was someone I actually knew and might wear it to the same event I'd probably shoot off a courtesy "hey FYI I'm going to make this, lets not show up in matching outfits" unless you WANT to show up in matching outfits and that's another issue entirely :-)

But for example Stephanie and Adrienne and I all have things from the same plaid, there's just not enough good fabric designs sometimes :-)

Now enough teasing what are you making!

[livejournal.com profile] jenthompson and I both had plans to make the same dress at one point. Everyone puts their own spin on things, because we're all unique special snowflakes. So go for it!

I say go for it! I wouldn't be offended if someone used the same inspiration as me, for my part. Or the same fabric. We all have the same books and shop in the same places, so it's just bound to happen.

I don't really know much about the unwritten rules for this, but I say go for it.

I say go for it - there are only so many resources and I don't think it's fair for someone to "own" a particular fashion plate or painting so that no on else can do it!
