Can anyone recommend a source for a nice, even linen? It doesn't have to be super thin, just not too stubbly.

Last weekend was the 3rd annual francaise dinner party. Our hostess out did herself again. The room was much more intimate, and everyone looked stunning.
So, as it tradition, I tried once again to make an 18th century evening gown, and once again it's green( don't ask me why, it just keeps happening). I think it turned out ok, the font opening is too wide I think, so I'll either rebut it or peace it. And the chevron stomacher, while I liked in theory, warped though out the night. But besides theses minor things, I'm very happy with it. I may even wear it again next year!

Number 1 wasn't worth showing anyone. It was the recommended size, but way too big. I re cut it two sizes smaller and tried again. It's semi-boned and laced just tight enough to fit the body since it disentangle have metal grommets in it yet. I think it looks and feels pretty good.

This isn't as scary as I thought!

Thank you all for the advice. I have some thinking to do before my next dress. Luckily I have some time to work it out. First is a compleat revamp of my Victorian wardrobe, starting with the corset. More on that later. Last weekend I hosted an 18th century picnic . Everyone looked lovely, and I had a great time. This was my first time hosting a party, and I was a nut worried. But people came, and we all had fun, so I will do it again sometime. And now what you all want...

I have been terrible about posting. I'll put up my pictures of the picnic tonight when I get home.
But first, I've been considering something, but it may be against the costumers code of ethics. Is it ok to male the same dress that someone else did? If you both had the same inspiration piece( extant gown, painting, movie costume, ect.) can you do it too? Or what if you found a period print and wanted to make a certain type of gown, but another person already made that style with the same fabric, it it ok to do it too? And I'm not talking about the curtain a long, where the point is to have the same fabric. I don't want to offend anyone.

This was almost a dress in a day. The first day I had it almost completely finished. If I had started before 7 pm I'm sure I could have hemmed it and gotten the ruffle sewn on. But i did make a new under petticoat, the first 12 inches are quilted so its light weight, but puffs out nicely. I'm so excited to wear it!

I dyed the the fabric yesterday. I tested it first, and no matter what concentration I used, I could only get bubblegum pink and light baby pink. So I went with the light. And it was too light. You could barely tell it was pink. So today I tried again, with a recipe I found online. This was a mix or red snd orange, dyed over the pink.

This shows the original white at the top, the baby pink , the bubblegum pink ( dry and wet) at the bottom, the coral color I was going for. After going through the wash cycle, the orange faded some, but it's now a warm pink, perfect. I only have around 4 yards, I hope it's enough.
I was also good and finished the hem on the court gown, so that needs to be trimmed now.

Beleive it or not, I've actually been doing some sewing! Soon I might actually have a court gown. I worked for about a day, and this is what I have so far.

Everyone has been working so hard over the past few days, and it will pay off tonight! Safe journey to those traveling from out of town, I can't wait to see everyone!

Does bow and buckle look stupid?

The gown is wearable! And it only took a five hour wives and daughters marathon and three old x-men cartoons. Tomorrow I'll start the petticoat, and hopefully by the weekend I'll be ready to trim.

So I did more then just mope around this weekend. I actually started my gown for the francaise dinner party. I'm using a silk damask I bought at fort Fred last year, I even bleach tested it, it's silk ( mostly). It's been years since I did an en fourreau back, but I think it turned out ok

The stays are done! And like all the underwear I've made before, they are slightly too big. They come nearly edge to edge. I don't have time now to re do them, so for now they will have to do. Time to start the anglaise

I've been a lazy costumer lately. I haven't sewn a thing in two months, and it's not like I have a lack of events to prepare for. I have the tea, which I have a half finished dress I could work on for. I have a ball in Jan that I want a 1890s dress for, and carinwood, which I could use the 1890s or make the teens dress I want. Not to mention the 18th cent dinner. I have fabric. I have patterns and design ideas. But I can't seem to get motivated to work on any of it.
I think it's because I'm so busy, when I get free time, I'm too tired. That, and i haven't been feeling well, so I'm trying to fit doctor appointments in too.
So my goal this weekend is to start something.

I had a great time! It was my first trip to New York, and I got to ride two ferries and see the Statue of Liberty. Plus, it was a lovely day for a picnic. I was pleasantly surprised by the turn out. There was a very large crowd, and the majority made some sort of an effort to dress up. Over all it was a nice, relaxing afternoon, and I have a new favorite era. The 20s are great! Sorry it's not much of a post, but it's too late.

I just bought this dress for work, but I think if I take off the belt and add the right accessories, maybe it could pass for 1920s. What do you think? Am I way off?
